UnchartedThe movie was originally intended to be released some time in 2013. It was supposed to be directed by David O’ Russell and the lead character would be played by Mark Wahlberg. It was also rumored that Robert De Niro would have a role in the film.

Unfortunately, Sony didn’t like the script O’ Russell submitted. The script was handed in on 2011 and according to reports, O’ Russell’s story headed off too far from the original story of the video game. For example, he included Nathan Drake’s family members in the film’s story when the video game only focused on Nathan.

Consequently, O’ Russell dropped out of the project and Neil Burger stepped in to write and direct the movie. Along with O’ Russell, Wahlberg and De Niro were detached from the project.

However, in 2012, it was reported that Burger also dropped the project in favor of other films he would be directing. This leaves the project “director-less” for the second time.

To keep the dream of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune fans alive, the filmmakers hired new writers for the film: the fantastic duo of Cormac and Marianne Wibberley who are well-known for the National Treasure franchise and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. It was also rumored that the fan-favorite Nathan Fillion would be playing the role of Nathan Drake.

Although the development of the film faced several difficulties, it seems that Sony Pictures along with Atlas Entertainment and Arad Production are determined to make a movie out of the popular game.

If Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune ever makes it to the cinemas, it would definitely be something worth seeing, for gamers and non-gamers alike. Besides, mutated descendants of Spaniards and Nazis attacking treasure hunters are not something you see every day.
